The Flora Mae Pike Hoover Community Service Award is presented annually to a Hoover resident to recognize outstanding volunteer service. Nomination forms for the 2018 award can be requested from the Flora Mae Pike co-chairs, Lois Taylor, 205-822-1461, and Judy McDaniel, 205-862-6889.
The 2017 recipient is Betty Daigle, a Hoover Service Club member. Betty served on the scholarship and hospitality committees, is a past president and was a gala/ways and means chair. She is known as the Gardening Granny at Riverchase Elementary School where she started outdoor garden classes in 2014 and continues to garden with 12 classes each semester. Betty is a Shelby County Master Gardener and volunteers at Aldridge Gardens. She is a member of the Hoover Beautification Board and works on several community events including Moss Rock Festival, City Hall Christmas Decorating, Arbor Day, Hazardous Waste Day, and the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast. She is active in the Bread and Roses and Outreach ministry at Prince of Peace Catholic Church.
