Flora Mae Pike Award

The Flora Mae Pike Hoover Community Service Award is presented annually to a Hoover resident to recognize outstanding volunteer service. Members are encouraged to request nomination forms from the Flora Mae Pike Award Committee chairs.

At our April 50th Anniversary Celebration, Flora Mae Pike Community Service Committee Chairs Hope Lawson and Frances Brocato proudly presented the 2025 Flora Mae Pike Community Service Award to Joan Purse. A member of the Hoover Service Club for 10 years, Joan has made a lasting impact on our community. She played a key role in the development of Hoover City Schools and worked to incorporate parts of Shelby County into the city of Hoover. Joan also served as a Girl Scout leader and taught in the Hoover School System for 20 years. Her commitment to service continues through her active involvement at church, where she has led as worship chairperson, youth leader, and mission project organizer. She has also directed the Holiday Market for many years. Although retired, Joan continues to make a difference by tutoring students in preparation for the ACT and EMT exams. She was recently honored at the Hoover Helps Christmas Gala and fundraiser for her outstanding support of the organization. Joan’s selfless dedication and tireless service are an inspiration to us all.
